More Jimmy Chin coverage is probably never a bad thing. These days a video bouncing around the Internet is one highlighting a shoot he did for National Geographic to showcase rock climbers in action, while he in turn was covered by the Camp 4 Collective.
Unravel this ball of yarn and you’ll find rewards on all levels. NG is getting better by the day in its presentations and scope, and certainly doesn’t need an intro. The Camp 4 Collective is new to many, and certainly deserves a check-out.

The Boston Globe’s Big Picture Web site has published several sets of iconic photos of this year’s Tour de France. A great way to get up close and personal … and avoid any painful encounters with Alberto Contador.
These are the concluding set of shots, and the first set appeared on July 15th.

If you think Borneo is just a huge collection of tropical islands, replete with jungles and beaches, take a look at this video of the final event of the 2010 Skyrunner® World Series – presented by the Federation for Sports at Altitude (FSA).
No question these vertically oriented runners are a breed apart. And utterly photogenic.

If you’re ever wondering how to find a simple test to identify a trail runner, just display a simple photo of a place … with a singletrack trail leading out to the horizon. A heart rate increase of 20 or more BPM is the giveaway.
As part of its ongoing offerings on XYZ “‘Round the World,” Wend Magazine has come up with a collection of a dozen locations from the four corners of the earth — each displayed in a simple shot of a trail. A click on the country name leads you to the photographer’s collections.
Here’s a challenge to Wend, or anyone else, to build an online collection of such simple images, maybe filling the screen. A click on each opens a unique and exciting jump to a must-run place. The BP is up already.

Photograph by Bradford Washburn
Bradford Washburn was one of the great pioneers of outdoor photography in the era spanning the ’20′s through the ’60′s – when wool and leather and massive cameras were the norm. As shown by this new gallery mounted by OutsideOnline.com, he (and, it should be noted, his wife) undertook some of the most exciting adventures imaginable to get these great shots. Thank you, Outside, for presenting them.
http://outsideonline.com/culture/travel-gd-bradford-washburn-photography-photo-gallery-sidwcmdev_093931.html
But, it should be noted, the huge exposure the OutsideOnline presentation provides serves us all immensely, by pointing us to the source of the works: The Decaneas Archive in Massachusetts. Drop in online and see even more works and some biographical offerings as well. Washburn was quite a person, and the world of outdoor photography needs to know him better.

The Boston Globe’s The Big Picture recently published 47 top entries in the 2010 National Geographic Photo Contest, and, as might be expected, they were superb. Take a look.
As for this shot: Kanana Camp, Botswana. Pulling over by the side of the road to watch a grazing giraffe, we spotted an amber head lurking behind a small mound. A hungry lioness. Watching, waiting, camera to my eye, she eventually chose her moment and pounced just as the giraffe sensed danger. The lioness gave chase, but failed. Hungry, she lay down, invisible, in the grass not ten feet from us and waited again. (Photo and caption by Alex Tan)

Adventures come in all shapes and sizes, and on January 7th a tour of epic proportions will get underway. In the words of two heroic women:
“The Cycling Silk 2010 expedition team consists of Kate Harris and Melissa Yule, two young scientists, wilderness conservationists, inveterate adventurers, and experienced long-distance cyclists. Best childhood pals since the age of 10, Kate and Mel have been co-conspirators in countless misadventures, from biking across the USA in 2005 to cycling across Tibet and Xinjiang along China’s Silk Road in 2006.
“After this last trip, Kate and Mel vowed to someday finish cycling the Silk Road left untraveled, namely that rather long and daunting stretch between Europe and China. Meanwhile, they underwent further endurance training by enlisting in graduate school. Kate earned a Master’s degree with a thesis on transboundary conservation and conflict resolution (Oxford), and then earned another Master’s in earth and planetary science (MIT). Mel worked on long-term environmental and community development projects in Ecuador and Nigeria, and earned a Master’s in sustainable development and capacity building (Guelph).
“Now we plan to put lessons learned in the classroom, in the field, and on previous adventures to the ultimate test. To echo the words of 19th-century round-the-world cyclists Thomas Gaskell Allen and William Sachtleben:
‘The idea of a trip had been conceived by us as a practical finish to a theoretical education; and the bicycle was adopted as a means to an end.’”
They ride and they write, they shoot video and photos, and they inspire. We think that following them next year will prove to be time well spent.

The venerable Canoe & Kayak Magazine has reached a tipping point –
– in the December 2010 issue: Bigger, longer, “perfectly” bound, classier paper, and right on target for the presentation of a set of truly memorable components.
Read the issue from front to back and you start with a collection of double-page-sized adventure photos from different points in the modern era of paddling, move to some fun write-ups about great craft/related “toys” of history, heads-ups on new products, and conclude with mini-reviews of hundreds of canoes and kayaks. The photographer in us can start at this end and trace the role of the art through one of the great adventure pastimes of the modern age.
Or, flip the issue and start at the “new” cover, and take the reverse voyage, in which a paddler can move from his/her basic tools into memorialized time-freezes of classic on-water scenes – captured in all their glory by action photographers through the years.
Paddlesports and photography … a match made in Heaven.

We’ve often been in the water with the swimmers, on the slopes with the skiers and boarders, and running in the woods with the trail and mountain racers, but the show-stopping question has been: How do you get that in-the-action opportunity in fast-paced road races such as biking and running? In other words, when you dump the idea of piling into a press truck or sitting backwards in a pace car or motorcycle, what can you do?
The jury is still out on the cycling side of things, but yesterday at the ING New York City Marathon we saw the answer to the question of how to shoot super images at a mass running race: Inline skating.
Somewhere on First Avenue, the mystery man appeared — gliding along faster than the runners. Helmet and pads, a backpack and oversized wheels. Stopping to catch a series of shots. Overtaking and sliding in close for something special. Doubling back and re-formatting a scene with new subjects. And, to be sure, covering an immense distance on a spectacularly photogenic course to capture a range of shots that would be the envy of a small army of less-mobile shooters.
We have a new hero. All he lacked yesterday was a red cape. (Wish we had a pic.)

Yup. And the proof of the premise is the Hairy Gorilla Half Marathon and Squirrelly Six Mile races, which just had their sixth annual offering on …. you guessed it, Halloween. As usual, the folks at the Albany (NY) Running Exchange put on a great party, and managed to once again combine an impressive pair of races with two fun-filled (and markedly vertical) tours of John Boyd Thacher State Park.
The woods were full of gorillas, crazed oversized woodland creatures, and a significant number of escapees from a C-monster flick. Check it out. http://hairygorilla.alpengraphik.com

As described in the October 5th blog entry, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has rolled out its new photo Website, EnduraPix.com. While still in a bit of late-beta form — having been launched in time to connect with the Ironman® world championship competition at Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i (10/9) — the site offers up some interesting tools and processes. Its overall function can be neatly summarized in the WTC’s trademark filing, namely the “(l)icensing of intellectual property rights, namely, digital and still images, photographs, and stock photographs; licensing of digital and still images, photographs, and stock photographs.” With some barebones browsing and search tools on the site, it is now on the road to fulfilling its mission.
The start is slow, somewhat unlike the style of the WTC (witness the rollout of the new 5150 — or 5i50 in their marketing mode — race series). Currently 11 pro photographers, who have all been retained by WTC to use their exclusive linkages with the race, are in the process of contributing images for the site’s members/users to retrieve or purchase. The former from the Free category, and the latter from the Stock, Exclusive, and Collections sections. More than 1,600 photos are currently available, but it is worth noting that at this juncture, there are not many images that are at all beyond the race-snapshot level. That will, it is expected, change as the upper-level categories are filled with the better work product of these world-class shooters.
As it is an early-stage venture, one can excuse issues like the unfinished FAQ and the less-than-stellar response of the software. The future could be very exciting, as the browse system indicates that Ironman® and Ironman 70.3® races will be covered. Add to this the potential for some level of participation the 5150 series and other athletic events within WTC’s expansive corporate family, and the chances of large-scale changes in sports photography and licensing become apparent. Note that the trademark language is without restriction to “triathlons.”

One of the great benefits of being (or aspiring to be) an active “adventure photographer” is to be able to participate in some truly memorable activities. The third edition of the Mountain Epic Sunday River trail race on October 10th (at the Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine) was just such an occasion for alpenGRAPHIK. The weather was perfect, the mountains majestic, and the foliage was prime. Add into the mix a spirited Fall Weekend festival, and the result was super.
There were three concurrent races, with loads of vertical, and details are found on the Web site.
As for the graphic presentation, a click to http://mountainepic.alpengraphik.com will be sufficient.

A winning photographic combination is a beautiful city, a huge crowd of participants, and bicycle-related events. Two weekends ago (September 26th), Boston again offered up its annual Hub on Wheels festivities, comprising three mass rides through the city on car-free streets and parkways, a professional criterium — the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup — with a range of races (men’s, women’s, kids’, a corporate challenge, and a race of the mascots of the major Boston sports teams), and a major bike-oriented festival at City Hall Plaza.
What a day it was. And especially exciting in that Boston is hugely committed to biking. Under the enthusiastic oversight of Mayor Menino and biking program coordinator Nicole Freedman, this event will be around in ever-increasing size for years to come.

In light of this weekend’s Ironman World Championship at Kona, Hawaii, it’s worth reviewing the new rules and procedures implemented recently by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). There are two levels of interest regarding sports and adventure photography, both of which will probably prove to be game-changers — a premise supported by the track record of WTC in shaping mass-participation events and the business considerations underlying them.
Briefly, the first level of action is that WTC is taking control of the image capture process, and the second is that it is taking control of the image distribution process. Is there a theme here? Could be, since WTC is renowned in the sports work for just this type of dramatic step, and the financial results attest to the success of their style. As a pre-race review, we present the description of the capture process offered by WRC:
To reduce the volume of on-course vehicles and traffic, increase safety and further enhance the athlete experience, the following changes will be implemented:
- A new photography site (www.EnduraPix.com) will launch the first week of October, offering high quality on-course imagery and, in its first year, will feature photos from both World Championship events for purchase.
- Motorcycle and vehicle access to the bike and run courses will be limited to EnduraPix photographers only, however WTC will continue to offer a press truck for a limited number of credentialed photographers.
- WTC will no longer offer media access to the finish line floor. At the Ford Ironman World Championship, credentialed photographers will be stationed on the media bleachers that face the finish line. Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 credentialed photographers will be stationed on the raised platform facing the finish line.
- Credentialed photographers will continue to have access to the swim start of both World Championship events via pier and beach in Kailua-Kona and Clearwater, respectively. Additionally, photographers will continue to have access to open areas of the bike and run course by foot.

That will certainly send a message to sports shooters everywhere. As for the distribution side of the process, more to follow in the days after the event.

The (2010) Lobsterman Triathlon and Aquabike took place on Saturday, September 18th, in Freeport, Maine. In 2009, Triathlete Magazine called it the Most Scenic Race in the U.S. — and it lived up to it reputation this year.
Background shots are being mounted at SmugMug, accessible via http://lobsterman.alpengraphik.com (where you’ll be able to see some panoramas that won’t appear in the galleries).
Parenthetically, as is often the case, the photographers covering events come up with some novel techniques to better the practice of sports coverage. In this case, the shooter’s inflatable dinghy appeared shy one oar, and a borrowed kayak paddle proved just the ticket to move the craft with surgeon-like skill through eight waves of 100+ swimmers. And a new aquatic sport is born!
Images of the technique will be offered as they are discovered.

PDN Online reports that:
“Photographer James Balog has won a $100,000 Heinz Award for his Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) project, which documents the effects of global climate change on glaciers around the world. Balog was among a group of ten individuals who received Heinz Awards yesterday for their environmental work.
“‘I’m delighted to be in such distinguished company with so many people doing really great work,’ Balog told PDN.”
What a fantastic thing this is. What could we do with ten (or 50!) more programs like this?

It may be a very slick, consumer-oriented gallery of photos, but the Professional Photos – Sports section of the webshots site offers a significant array of high quality images in fields of core interest to Graphik Snaps. They are nicely categorized, and the user interface provides numerous ways to dive into the taxonomy — as well as links to related collections, e.g., Travel.
Download and order fulfillment is first class.

It’s a gray afternoon and the clock is ticking toward Five, so why not think about something of importance at least a layer or two greater than where the car is parked today.
How about planning a pilgrimage tour to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, coupled with a photo workshop billed as the highest in the world? It’s offered by Himalayan Workshops, and occurs Sunday, April 17th through Tuesday May 3rd, 2011.
Even if your busy during that period, reading about such opportunities is one of the benefits of being a photographer. http://himalayanworkshops.com/

So, henceforth a live feed from OP – The Blog will be available on this page, located at the lower end of the right column. (If it weren’t for the existence of graphiksnaps.info, OP – The Blog would be a prime candidate for Home designation.

Lists of this and that appear all the time, but occasionally there is one that stands out, the latest in this category being The Outside Documentary Canon, published in the September 2010 Outside Magazine. Noted as “25 of the best adventure, investigative and nature documentaries ever,” the article is incorporated in the Life List 2010 issue — a sort of bucket list for the active element of the population.
Five “Adventure …. true life epics” (e.g., Touching the Void and Stranded); five “Muckraking Documentaries …. uncovered the havoc humans wreak” (e.g., Inconvenient Truth and The Cove); five “Nature Films …. redefining the way we view our planet” (e.g., Migration of the Penguins and Earth); and ten classic “Documentaries …. that changed outdoor filmmaking” (e.g., Olympia, Kon-Tiki, and Endless Summer).
One reads these summaries and instantly remembers seeing many of the flicks, and, yes, they were as good as Outside says they were. And the many we’ve heard about but not seen? It’s not too hard to predict a bump in adventure movie traffic at Amazon and NetFlix.
As an aside, a day doesn’t pass when announcements don’t appear for the latest version of a pocket camera sporting HD and stereo recording that rivals the fanciest video rigs of last year. If we can get past the tsunami of trash that will appear in the near future on YouTube, we can be assured a wealth of high quality outdoor adventure footage that will dwarf what has come before.
In days past, an adventurer like Galen Rowell who shot great photos was a rarity, but technology has put a magical power in the hands of explorers and activists everywhere, and we are the beneficiaries.

Here’s a great opportunity, as the Great Bear Rainforest RAVE is underway in British Columbia. Follow the work of a world-class photo and media team at the iLCP Blog.
And while the subject is the iLCP, it’s a great time to give a salute to the Tripods in the Mud (TIM) program, “an initiative of the iLCP that helps partner professional photographers with conservation organizations for the creation of visual materials on a specific region or issue.” Some of the more recent activities are chronicled in the iLCP Blog.

Ansel Adams | Who hasn’t heard of him? But Earl Brooks? Photo images certainly have the power to shape our perceptions and our collective feelings for the natural world, but is it the image AND the name that work the magic? Imagine a new collection by Adams, valued at $200 million – or by Brooks, valued at …. maybe $45. And if experts can’t tell the difference in the prints? What might the power of the image be in shaping our future if all photographers and artists had world-class PR staffs. Check out the fascinating story unfolding in California, covered by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
